A letter from UT2 Klute, NAVFAC Adak Seabee 89-91

Bob, I wanted to pass along to you that I was so excited to see an old piece of my history resurface on your Blog. Wow I couldn't believe it. CLICK to see the photo taken by Pete Pritchard. I painted this wall mural back on the NAVFAC gym wall I would say back in 90 - 91. I used an old transparency overhead projector to trace it on the wall and used spray paint and any paint I could find in the paint locker. Notice in Alaska above the crown there is SEABEE. This was my little add and not on the Original Crest…

Thank you Mr. Rich & Mr. Pritchard for bringing me a happy reminder from the past. With so many photos reflecting Adak as a ghost town with vandalism and building falling apart due to no upkeep, it was so great to see the mural I painted about 20 Years ago in perfect shape and have the opportunity to share it with my family.

Hello Bob, We were stationed on Adak from 1980-81. We have lots of nice memories from there. But, the best thing that I did there was marrying my wife Maria, in that chapel on top of the hill (photo # 212 taken by Pete). I was a TMSN back then attached to the WEP/DEPT. Maria was a EMSN. When I close my eyes I can still see all them stars in that big beautiful Adak sky.
Take care & GOD BLESS.

That's awesome - I was there as a dentist LT from 90-92. I worked at NSGA one day a week doing dental exams, filligs. I loved the galley out there for lunch and of course the drive out there was always awesome!

My ex was a Seabee at NSGA - then ENS Berninghaus. We met there and got married on Adak.

Great to hear from you CDR Berninghaus. Are you still in the service? That would be 20 years (I can't believe it). Would you consider sending me a photo I can post? We're very short on photos of women officers on this page :) Thanks! Bob

If I don't already have your photo posted, please consider sending 'then and now' photos. That's always fun to see. Thanks! Bob

Hi Bob,
I was on Adak Sept.'71-Sept.72 as
a very young Navy Nurse at the clinic. During my time there the
Nurses were the only female active duty personnel assigned to the island. Good times. We were pampered, treated very respectfully, and never got to "sit
out" a dance when there was a live
band.
At the clinic, we had many Russian
and Japanese patients taken off of their fishing vessels by SAR.
There were several Japanese dependent wives who were very willing to act as interpreters for us. However, for the Russians, it
was our guys who'd been trained as
interpreters, I'm assuming in conversational Russian, to listen in on transmissions. Sooo, it was
a little dicey when we needed them
to explain to the Captain airlifted
off of his ship that he had a lower
G.I. bleed and we needed to do a colonoscopy...say what?!
Or the female sailor with an ectopic pregancy and needed emergency surgery. The words
"ectopic pregnancy" don't come up
often in casual conversation.
I'd love to hear from anyone stationed there, ever.

Lt. Rick and Karen Berquist were on the rock from June 71 to June 73 (NAVFAC Supply). We were a few of the ones who built the log cabin across from the National Forest, hung out with you medical folks. Our daughter was born there, very proud to claim Adak as her birthplace. Just found this site!

My dad and his EOD buddies built a log cabin while we were there (1972-1974). It had an awesome loft and us kids decided it was just for us. We would take off exploring for hours while they built it. We would dig up sea rations and bring them back like discovered treasure. My dad pulled up the floors of an old quanset hut and nailed the planks to the wall of our dining room like paneling - he and mom called it "The Adak Wall". :) Best memories ever!

You were there when I was! Where was the cabin located? Do you have a photo I can post along with a picture of yourself?
