CE2 R. L. Herring ‘Lew’, assigned to Adak Public Works from 1970-72

To: Bob Rich...

Bob, we have never communicated before but I have been reading your blog and thought you might like to ‘post’ the following information for all interested Seabees. I was a CE2 assigned to Adak Public Works from 1970-72, first in the Electrical Shop, then Air Field Lighting, then the Emergency Maintenance Center, and finally to the Bering Hill Maintenance Center located under the Chow Hall on the hill. Never worked in the Telephone Exchange but visited it occasionally.

The reason I am writing this is to let you know about the NEW Seabee Museum that has been built at Port Hueneme...

... I just learned about its existence two weeks ago and thought you might be interested. The OLD museum has been closed to the public (as of October 2010) and its contents are being moved to the NEW building prior to the grand opening in the fall of this year. They are providing a 'Victory Walk' in front of the building, which will be paved with individual bricks and inscribed with messages after being purchased by Seabees and/or their families and friends (see samples at bottom).

Each brick can contain only 3 lines of 20 characters each, with each line being centered all in capital letters. You might want to inform your other Seabee friends of the 'Buy a Brick' offer so they can honor themselves or others in the same manner. I was told there are a total of 14,000 bricks available, with 4,100 already purchased. The NEW museum is scheduled to open in the fall (actual date to be announced). They even have a new logo (looks like a hardhat to me, but I think it is suppose to represent a Quonset Hut). I think they are going to move the ‘fighting Seabee’ in front of the OLD building to the NEW building.

For more information and how to make a donation, be sure to check out the museum websites at... www.seabeehf.org/museum/index.htm

Hello Ron! I had a EO friend by the name of Vincent Cittadeno (Vinny) from NY. He lived on the hill too. Do you know him? We were stationed at the Boardman Bombing Range in Oregon before being transferred to Adak. He was the 'company clerk' and I was one of the 'bomb spotters'. That was an interesting tour of duty. Ron, what is your last name and what jobs did you perform on Adak?
